According to Ayurveda literature, Arjuna bark is Astringent in taste, anti-Pitta-Kapha, anti- poison, and cures wounds, fever, skin diseases, and fractured bones. It provides nutrition to heart muscles, corrects heart rhythms and reduces the heart rate. This is effective in treating edema, lowers the chances of formation of blood clots, and reduces nervousness and stress. It averts atherosclerosis due to its anti-Kapha properties, preventing strokes and heart attacks. Due to its light, astringent and dry qualities help to pacify Kapha, and its Cold Veerya reduces Pitta. Its astringent properties make it one of the best applications on wounds as it dries the oozing wounds and ulcers.
This is why it also helps against all kinds of bleeding. It has a diuretic action, is effective in treating urinary tract infections, burning micturition, and contributes towards sexual health.
Ayurveda considers Brahmi as one of the best herbs for brain functions, neurology, and psychiatry. It is Astringent, Bitter in taste, Light and sharp in properties and cooling in potency. Its unique effect / Prabhava is Brain tonic / Medhya.
Arjuna’s active constituents include tannins, triterpenoid saponins (arjunic acid, arjunolic acid, arjungenin, arjunglycosides), flavonoids (arjunone, arjunolone, luteolin), gallic acid, ellagic acid, oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), phytosterols, calcium, magnesium. These ensure improvement of cardiac muscle function and subsequently improved pumping activity of the heart. It is thought the saponin glycosides might be responsible for the inotropic effects of Terminalia, while the flavonoids and OPCs provide free radical antioxidant activity and vascular strengthening.
Bacopa is traditionally used as an anti-anxiety remedy. Researchers suggest that it might protect brain cells from chemicals responsible for causing Alzheimer's disease. Brahmi improves verbal learning rate and memory consolidation. Triterpenoid saponins and Bacosides A and B of Bacopa monnieri play key roles for enhancing nerve impulse transmission. Bacosides support the repair of damaged neurons by enhancing kinase activity, neuronal synthesis, restoration and regeneration of synaptic activity resulting in nerve impulse transmission.
A study entitled “Free radical scavenging capacity and protective effect of Bacopa monnieri on DNA damage, 2003”, suggests that Brahmi has an antioxidant capacity, scavenging free radicals in the body while protecting the DNA cleavage. This study in Brahmi action against free radicals has value in treating pathologies where free radical production is evident.
Centella asiatica contains certain chemicals that seem to decrease inflammation and also decrease blood pressure, helping prevent static blood clots. It improves blood circulation and reduces oedema. Terminalia arjuna improves cardiac muscle function and pumping activity of the heart. The saponin glycosides deliver the inotropic effect of Terminalia, while the flavonoids and OPCs provide free radical antioxidant activity and vascular strengthening.
