Ushira; also known as Khuskhus Grass; or Vetiveria zizanioides, is among the best Ayurveda herbs useful for pacifying the Pitta Dosha. It is just like nectar in the summer season as it alleviates all the health issues related to the summer season.
Vetiveria zizanioides / Ushira is one of the calming herbs in Ayurveda. It de-stresses and corrects the digestive system. It is light, dry in properties, sweet, bitter in taste, pungent in Vipaka, and cold in Veerya, pacifying Pitta and Kapha, one of the best deodorants, coolants, and relaxants.
As per Western research, Guggul (Commiphora mukul) alkaloids reduce inflammations and swellings. Clinical research evidence suggests that taking 500 mg of Guggul (containing 3.5% guggulsterone) three times daily might improve pain. It increases basal metabolic rate, burns more calories, improves thyroid function, and increases thermogenesis or heat production. As antioxidants, guggulsterone keeps LDL cholesterol from oxidizing, an action which protects against atherosclerosis. One small clinical trial found that Guggul is an effective antibiotic, compared favorably to tetracycline in the treatment of cystic acne. The amount of Guggul extract taken in the trial was 500 mg twice per day.
Licorice contains many anti-depressant compounds, and hundreds of potential healing, including various plant estrogens/phytoestrogens. The herb's key therapeutic compound, glycyrrhizin; 50 times sweeter than sugar, exerts numerous beneficial effects on the body. It can also be used for irritation, inflammation, and spasm in the digestive tract. Licorice also appears to enhance immunity by boosting levels of interferon, a key immune system chemical that fights off attacking viruses. It also contains powerful antioxidants as well as certain phytoestrogens that can perform some of the functions of the body's natural estrogens; very helpful during menopause. Glycyrrhizin acid also seems to stop the growth of many bacteria and of viruses such as influenza A. Its anti-allergenic effect is very useful for hay fever, allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and bronchial asthma.
